Yes! Barolo Grill founder Blair Taylor began taking the entire staff on educational trips to Italy each year, commencing in 1995.
This annual pilgrimage continues as Ryan Fletter, 23 year veteran and longtime Barolo Grill Wine Director (and now owner), galvanizes the continuation of these historic efforts. Ryan was on the first trip over two decades ago, and celebrated the tradition this year the Barolo Grill staff made their 22nd food and wine trip in July 2017.
The trip is a chance for the entire staff to experience and understand the food and wines of Italy, firsthand! When you dine at Barolo Grill you will taste how the chefs have perfected their dishes under the advice of some of the finest chefs in Italy. When a server or sommelier recommends a wine, often it is because they have tasted with the winemaker, walked through the vineyard, and toured the cellar & winery- allowing a unique understanding for the nuances that will provide the perfect pairing for you meal.
The 10 day trip takes place during the 1st week of July each year. The itinerary is unique each year and includes stays in Piedmont, Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, the Veneto, sometimes as far north as the province of the Alto Adige. We have even crossed borders into neighboring France, to explore the epic food and wine areas of Burgundy, Provence and the Rhone Valley.
When in Piedmont, we stay in the glorious town of Alba close enough to visit to the amazing producers of Barolo and Barbaresco as well as some of the most classic restaurants in the region. In Tuscany, we stay in historic towns like Castellina in Chianti or Montepulciano. From there, we visit producers of Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, highly regarded Super Tuscan producers, and of course all along the way visiting incredible restaurants, some very modern, some very classic!
